New Students Take Oath of Professionalism At Campbell Law

RALEIGH, N.C. – Chief Judge John C. Martin of the North Carolina Court of Appeals administered the Oath of Professionalism to the members of the class of 2012 at Campbell Law School on Tuesday, September 8 as part of first year student orientation. Each new student at Campbell Law takes the Oath, pledging to live by the following professional creed:

I, (State Your Name), as a student entering Campbell Law School, understand that I am both joining an academic community and embarking on a professional career.  I acknowledge the privileges inherent in becoming a lawyer and willingly accept the responsibilities that accompany those privileges.

I promise to do my utmost to live up to the high ideals of the legal profession and to uphold the highest standards of academic honesty and ethical practice throughout my legal training and the remainder of my professional life.  I will always remember that my actions reflect not only upon myself, but also upon Campbell Law School and the legal profession.

I will always conduct myself with dignity and civility and will treat all of my colleagues – students, staff, and faculty – with courtesy and respect.

I vow to be a person of principle, compassion, strength and courage.  I will recognize my weaknesses and strengths and strive to develop the character that is demanded of a lawyer.

I commit to conduct my academic, professional, and personal life to honor the values and standards that are expressed in the Campbell Law School Code of Honor and Professional Responsibility and shared by the legal profession.

This pledge I take freely and upon my honor.

“An unwavering commitment to professionalism, integrity and ethics is the cornerstone of the educational experience at Campbell Law School,” said Dean Melissa Essary. “By taking this Oath of Professionalism on the very first day of orientation, our students know the personal and professional expectations that we have of them before they even set foot in a classroom. We are honored that Chief Judge Martin was here to preside of this year’s ceremony. I believe his participation made the event that much more special for our students.”

Chief Judge John C. Martin received his B.A. and J.D. degrees from Wake Forest University, and has completed the General Jurisdiction Program at the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada and the Justice Executives Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following his legal education, Judge Martin served as an officer in the United States Army from 1967 through 1969, and was in the private practice of law in Durham for thirteen years, where he served on the Durham City Council, chairing the City’s Public Works Committee. Judge Martin was Resident Superior Court Judge for the Fourteenth Judicial District (Durham County) for more than seven years before his election to the North Carolina Court of Appeals, where he is completing his eighteenth year of service, and his fourth year as Chief Judge.
