Common Cause President and CEO Bob Edgar Addresses Audience at Campbell Law

RALEIGH, N.C. – On Thursday, October 8, the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law hosted a talk by Bob Edgar, president and CEO of Common Cause.

Common Cause, headquartered in Washington D.C., is a national nonpartisan, non-profit "citizens" lobby working to make government at all levels more honest, open and accountable, and to connect citizens with their democracy. Mr. Edgar arrived at Common Cause with a long history of leadership and public service that included 12 years in the U.S. House of Representatives (D-PA). Edgar served as the general secretary of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA for seven years immediately before joining Common Cause.

As Edgar explained, a primary goal of Common is to reduce the amount of money involved in politics at all levels. The organization is focused on how to reform the elections process to minimize the influence of lobbyists and well-financed organizations. “We want the to process to work so when people are elected, the vote can be easily audited and confirmed,” said Edgar. “Elections should serve the public, not the special interest groups.”

“We are not going to resolve any of today’s problems without recognizing the coerciveness of money and greed for power,” continued Edgar. “I believe that our challenge today is motivating every citizen that they can personally make a difference in their communities and across this nation.”
