Immigration lawyer Buwalda speaks to Campbell law students

In the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah exhorted the people of Judah to obey God's commands, "seek justice" and show compassion for their fellow man. Today, lawyer Ann Buwalda is living out that call, helping people under oppression around the world. Speaking to law students at Campbell University this week, Buwalda shared her passion for using her legal expertise in an international venue.

N.C. Court of Appeals convenes at Campbell
October 30, 2006
Judges from the North Carolina Court of Appeals came to Campbell University Thursday, Oct. 19, to hear appeals on three civil cases. The visit is part of an educational outreach of the North Carolina judiciary to give law students a first-hand glimpse of the real workings of the court. The court also hears cases at other law schools across the state.

October 2, 2006, Washington, DC - Nine graduates of Campbell University's School of Law and new Dean Melissa Essary were sworn in to the US Supreme Court, Chief Justice John Roberts presiding, on the first day of the term Monday.

Campbell Law Professor Recognized for Contributions to Real Estate Manual

Patrick Hetrick, a professor at Campbell University's Norman A. Wiggins School of Law, was honored this month for his work on the 2006-2007 edition of the North Carolina Real Estate Manual, an 841 textbook published by the NC Real Estate Commission.

Essary formally installed as new dean of Campbell School of Law

Melissa Essary was formally installed Monday, Aug. 14, as the fourth dean of Campbell University's Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. Essary's installation was the focus of the 31st Convocation ceremony for the law school.

Korean law students get a taste of American education and culture
August 07, 2006
Once again a delegation of second-year law students from South Korea's Handong International Law School have traveled to Campbell University to take part in three weeks of intensive study for a semester's credit in Trial Advocacy law. This arrangement is one of several exchange and cooperative programs between Campbell and the South Korean law school that was launched five years ago as a graduate law program preparing students for global practice with an American and international focus. Almost all the Handong students who have participated in these special study programs at Campbell have gone on to pass U.S. bar exams.

Something for Jill: Upshaw establishes scholarship honoring disabled wife

Al Upshaw, a computer technician at Campbell's Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, has established a law school scholarship honoring his wife Jill, a vivacious and loving mother who suffered severe head injuries in a 1999 auto accident that left her in a semi-conscious state. The Upshaw's are the parents of three daughters. Their youngest, Caroline, was born seven months after Jill's accident on May 9, 2000, while Jill was still in a coma. The Jill Glover Upshaw Endowed Law Scholarship was established to benefit single parents and students in need who are applying to law school.

Campbell alumna elected president of state Academy of Trial Lawyers

Rebecca Britton, a 1992 graduate of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University, has been elected president of the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers for 2006-2007. Britton is a partner at the law firm of Hutchens, Senter & Britton in Fayetteville, N.C.

Campbell law students receive grants from interest on lawyer trust funds
May 16, 2006
Several students enrolled in Campbell University's Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law have been selected to receive IOLTA grants. IOLTA stands for the North Carolina State Bar plan for Interest on Lawyer's Trust Accounts and was established by the State Bar and the North Carolina Supreme Court to generate income from lawyer trust accounts in order to fund programs for students and the general public. Among other services, the program provides civil legal aid to indigents and grants funds for students' legal education on the basis of need. Campbell law students Crystal Grimes, Carrie Randa, Nikki Reason, Jessica Snowberger and Elizabeth Yager were this year's IOLTA grant winners.

Campbell Commends its Moot Court Teams
March 27, 2006
While the rest of the Law School community was enjoying its well-deserved Spring Break, two Campbell Moot Court Teams were busy preparing for, traveling to and competing in the American Bar Association's National Appellate Advocacy Competition for the Southeastern Region. The two teams consisted of second-year law students Josh Lee, Tom Murry and Sharon Scudder, and Kristen Atkins-Momot, Wayne Hollowell, and Catherine McCulloch. The Campbell teams competed among 27 nationwide teams representing schools from North Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Alabama, Texas, Ohio and Michigan.

Essary Named Dean of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law

Campbell University President, Dr. Jerry M. Wallace, has announced the appointment of Professor Melissa Essary as the next Dean of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. In making the announcement on Thursday, March 2, President Wallace was joined by Campbell trustees Harold Wells, Fred Taylor, Bob Barker, Ray Bryan and Clyde Rhyne.

Whichard reviews book on Founding Father

He doesn't have the narrative flair of a David McCullough or a Joseph Ellis, but Walter Stahr's “John Jay: Founding Father,” is an excellent biography of one of the nation's least publicized but most important historical figures. The Honorable Willis Whichard, dean of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University, reviewed Stahr's book for the October 2005 issue of “The North Carolina Historical Review.”

BB&T makes major contribution to Campbell University
January 24, 2006
Campbell University announced a gift of $700,000 from BB&T, a financial holding company that operates more than 1,400 branch offices in the Carolinas, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Tennessee, Alabama, Washington, D.C., and Indiana. The $700,000 commitment to Campbell will be used to create scholarships for students interested in majoring in business, trust and investment management, law or those receiving a Master of Business Administration degree.
