Campbell University's Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law was recognized for its Juvenile Justice Mediation program. Law Professor Jon Powell, coordinator of the program, accepted an award Friday, Dec. 14, on behalf of the Law School from Linda Hayes, chair of the Governor's Crime Commission of North Carolina.

Class of '84 Law graduate provides first major gift to campaign for Raleigh

John C. Bruffey, Jr., Partner in the firm of Drew Eckl & Farnham, LLP, Atlanta, has made the first major commitment to the School of Law's Campaign for Raleigh with a pledge of $250,000. Bruffey is a member of the Campbell School of Law Class of 1984. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Buies Creek, NC - Professor Robert Cochran addressed first year Campbell School of Law students as part of the 2007-08 Professionalism Series, speaking on the topic of faith and the law and highlighting the valuable role of the Christian lawyer. Professor Cochran is the Louis D. Brandeis Professor of Law at Pepperdine University School of Law; where he is also the founder and director of the Institute on Law, Religion, and Ethics. Cochran has authored or edited more than thirty-five articles and books, including Cases and Materials on the Legal Profession, Christian Perspectives and Legal Thought, and Lawyers, Clients, and Moral Responsibility.

Campbell Law Professor Kevin Lee lectured on the protection of intellectual property rights in a global world at the annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Christian Ethics at the University of Oxford in England. The theme of the conference was "Managerialism in Ethics." Lee's presentation examined the way the international legal system manages intellectual property rights.

Mr. Doug Bandow, the Cobden Fellow in International Economic for the Institute for Policy Innovation in Lewisville, Texas, addressed members of the Campbell Law Federalist Society on Tuesday October 16, 2007. Mr. Bandow is also the Robert A. Taft Fellow at American Conservative Defense Alliance. He is the author of Foreign Follies: America's New Global Empire (Xulon Press). He served as a Special Assistant to President Ronald Reagan and Deputy Representative to the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea.

Federalist Society Speaker Discusses Constitutionality of Business Incentives to Induce Economic Development

The Campbell School of Law Federalist Society hosted Dean Webster of the North Carolina Institute for Constitutional Law (NCICL) on October 4. Mr. Webster spoke on the topic of whether tax breaks and other monetary incentives offered by the State and local governments of North Carolina, to attract businesses to the state, are legal under the state constitution.

Elite institution of legal education plans move by 2009
October 04, 2007
Harold B. Wells, Chairman of the Campbell University Board of Trustees, announced today that the Board of Trustees unanimously voted to move the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law from the University's main campus in Buies Creek, N.C. to downtown Raleigh by the fall of 2009. The school plans to move to 225 Hillsborough St., the building known as Hillsborough Place. The City of Raleigh was previously the largest state capital in the country to not have a law school within its city limits.

It is even more challenging to attempt to meet the many and diverse informational needs of our law students each day. Despite these challenges, the Campbell University School of Law Library endeavors to be a vital resource by offering outstanding service to law students, faculty and staff. Thanks to a recent grant from the Felburn Foundation, the Campbell law library was able to complete a full facility renovation.

2007 Campbell Law Grads Lead on NC Bar Exam
August 25, 2007
Campbell University School of Law graduates posted yet another "first" on the latest North Carolina Bar Exam, chalking up a 95% passage rate, the highest among students from the five North Carolina law schools who took the two day examination in July of this year. These latest results reflect Campbell Law's stature of having the best overall bar passage rate in the state for the past 16 years.

The Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law welcomed the Class of 2010 on August 9, 2007! 128 new law students entered the law school hailing from all around the country. Those directly from undergraduate school joined former soldiers, engineers, and physicians to form this new group of future lawyers. Class credentials include a median LSAT score of 154 and a median GPA of 3.2.

About 600 people attended a memorial service and funeral on August 5 to honor the life of Norman Adrian Wiggins. The service was held at the D. Rich Memorial Building on the Campbell campus.

Hundreds touched by life of Dr. Norman A. Wiggins
August 10, 2007
Some of the state's top political, religious, business and educational leaders gathered on Sunday, August 5 to pay respects to Dr. Norman Adrian Wiggins, former president and chancellor of Campbell University. Among the hundreds of students, supporters and friends in attendance were U.S. Congressman Bob Etheridge, N.C. Secretary of State Elaine Marshal, former N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice I. Beverly Lake, North Carolina Senator Fred Smith, and Baltimore Orioles Hall of Famer Hal (Skinny) Brown. All were touched by Wiggins' powerful example and influence as president of Campbell University from 1967-2003. Wiggins died Wednesday, August 1, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center of complications from lymphoma.

The American Bar Association Criminal Justice Section has awarded its 2007 Minister of Justice Award to 1996 Campbell Law alum, Lt. Col. Stuart Couch, U.S. Marine Corps, for his stand as a Guantanamo JAG prosecuting attorney who decided not to bring charges against a prisoner connected with the 9/11 attacks because of his belief that evidence in the case was coerced by torture.

Wiggins' Vision Set Course for Law School's Success

Campbell University's Chancellor and former president, Dr. Norman Adrian Wiggins, died under hospital care in Winston-Salem, NC on August 1, 2007. Wiggins was president of Campbell from 1967-2003 and University Chancellor thereafter. The faculty, staff, and students of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law join the entire Campbell University community in mourning of the loss of Dr. Wiggins. Speaking about Dr. Wiggins, Campbell University President Jerry Wallace said, "This great man's influence and legacy will survive as long as Campbell University endures."

Korean law students practice courtroom skills at Campbell Law School

A delegation of law students from South Korea's Handong International Law School have been participating in a special study program at Campbell during the past three weeks. The students are enrolled in an intensive Trial Advocacy course and will be practicing their courtroom skills July 10-12 at the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law.

Korean law students visit NC
July 12, 2007
Twelve students from Korea's Handong International Law School spent three weeks at Campbell University, learning about the American legal system. They learned a semester's worth of litigation classes within that short period of time, but it wasn't the only challenge they faced. "As a Korean national, we're not really familiar with talking in front of people," said second year law student Min Chung. "It was challenging for me, personally."

Campbell School of Law A Finalist in World Arbitration Competition
May 03, 2007
The Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University has once again received international honors for outstanding advocacy. Campbell's International Commercial Moot Arbitration team was one of only 32 teams overall and only 10 American teams to make the final rounds of the 14th Annual Willem C. Vis Competition in Vienna, Austria. In a field of some 1,000 students representing 178 law schools from 51 countries on six continents, Campbell advanced beyond the preliminary rounds after arguing against Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (France), University of Hannover (Germany), and Belarusian State University/International Relations Faculty (Belarus). On the fifth day of the Competition, the team lost a close round to fifth-seeded ILS Law College of Pune, India.

Campbell Law Team wins New York ABA NAAC Regional Championship
March 12, 2007
Two Campbell University School of Law Moot Court Teams participated in the New York Regional Competition of the American Bar Association National Appellate Advocacy Competition held in Brooklyn, New York March 1-3, 2007. The team of Walter Webster, Chris Autry and Cat Hamilton won the Regional Championship, and will advance to the National Finals to be held in Chicago Mar. 29-31. The Team of John Shedden, Jeff Gillette and Katie Thrall made the Campbell win possible by keeping pace with a strong St. John's team in the third preliminary round, ensuring that the Webster-Autry-Hamilton Team advanced to the Sweet Sixteen.

Stroud Sworn in to NC Court of Appeals
January 22, 2007
Donna Stroud of Zebulon was recently sworn in as an associate judge on the state Court of Appeals. "Some of you practiced law with me and some of you practiced law against me, but I appreciate what you all taught me," Stroud said to supporters who packed a Court of Appeals courtroom for the oath. Stroud has served as a Wake County District Court judge since 2004.
