RALEIGH, N.C. – Rebecca Stevens, a 1983 graduate of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University was recently recognized by ProBono.net/NC for her assistance in helping a Wake County widower with serious foreclosure and custody issues.
The case began when a Wake County widower lost his job. His house went into foreclosure shortly thereafter. He and his two sons, one of them a minor, were living in their camper in a public campground when Children's Protective Services took custody of teenaged son and charged the widower with neglect. The Clerk of Court notified the gentleman that there were excess proceeds from the foreclosure sale and that he needed a lawyer to complete a title opinion and set up a hearing for him in order to have access to this money. Volunteer lawyer Rebecca L. Stevens, of Stevens and Hand, PLLC in Cary, accepted the case and successfully did all the Court required. On June 22, her client received a check for $75,552.76. Hand’s client is now in the process of finding a new place to live and taking the necessary actions to have his son returned home.
“Rebecca’s work in this case spotlights the importance of everyone having access to competent legal practitioners,” said Dean Melissa Essary. “She acted as an advocate for her client to not only solve his foreclosure issues, but also enabled her client to have the means to begin the process of reuniting his family. Using the law to help families in need is one of the most critical ways Campbell lawyers serve their communities. We couldn’t be more proud of her.”
