Campbell Law School

Amy Flanary-Smith

Amy Flanary-Smith is an expert in legal discourse and advocacy. She is Director of Campbell University's Legal Research and Writing Program and Assistant Professor of Law. She is a co-author of the Online Legal Research supplement to the popular McKinney and Childs text, Legal Research (West 2008). As Director, Professor Flanary-Smith develops comprehensive curriculum for Campbell's legal research and writing program and leads weekly program instruction. Each year, six of Raleigh's most outstanding practicing attorneys are selected to teach in the program, which allows Campbell law students to learn about legal discourse in a small class setting that capitalizes on Campbell's historic strengths of practical skills and compassionate advocacy. Prior to directing Campbell's Legal Research and Writing Program, Professor Flanary-Smith taught legal writing for four years. In 2006 and 2007, Flanary-Smith was the Interim Deputy Director of the Writing and Learning Resources Center at the University of North Carolina School of Law, where she created the SOAR bar success program.

Flanary-Smith is an experienced health law attorney, with both litigation and transactional experience. She has represented health care providers in all stages of litigation, from district court to the Supreme Court of North Carolina, and she frequently shares her expertise and consulting skills with North Carolina hospitals and physicians. Her scholarly interests include the intersections of patient competency, capacity, and consent with health care policy.
