Claire Moritz has served as the Vice President, Legal Services/General Counsel at WakeMed in Raleigh, N.C. since March 1986. In her role, she advises the Board of Directors, reports to the Chief Executive Officer, is responsible for providing legal counsel and guidance regarding multi-campus system activities to ensure maximum protection of the legal rights of the organization, and to maintain its operations within the limits prescribed by law.  

Ms. Moritz also acts as a liaison with and monitors the performance of outside counsel with respect to corporate and litigation matters, and prepares or reviews proposed contracts, managed care agreements, leases and other legal instruments upon request. She drafts and reviews a variety of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the law, and counsels the system’s two medical staffs regarding bylaws and other legal matters and represents them in credentialing fair hearings.  Ms. Moritz also advises physicians and hospital personnel regarding patient care legal issues, identifies and evaluates risk situations, and makes appropriate recommendations to reduce exposure to risk of financial loss.  

Prior to WakeMed, Ms. Moritz was an associate attorney at Harris, Cheshire, Leager and Southern. She also worked under The Honorable Grover C. McCain, Jr.

Ms. Moritz earned a B.S., summa cum laude, from Boston University, prior to obtaining a J.D. from Duke Law School.
